Glycerin is not oil, and the process is not the same
Most instructions for ozonating glycerin are copied from instructions for ozonating oil. They should not be. The two liquids react with ozone by different routes, and following the oil method here mostly means running your generator far longer than there is any reason to.
Vegetable oil ozonates slowly because ozone attacks the carbon–carbon double bonds in its unsaturated fatty acids and forms ozonides. That reaction is what thickens the oil into a gel, and the gel is the endpoint you watch for.
Glycerin has no such double bonds. It is a saturated molecule, three hydroxyl groups on a three-carbon backbone, so it cannot form ozonides at all. Ozone dissolves into it and slowly oxidises those hydroxyl groups. Nothing thickens. There is no gel, no meaningful colour change, and no visual endpoint.
That one difference drives everything below.
Viscosity is the whole equipment problem
At room temperature glycerin is roughly fifteen to twenty times thicker than olive oil. With oil, back-pressure creeps up over days as the gel forms. With glycerin you have it from the first minute.
- Back-pressure. Your pump or concentrator is pushing gas into a syrup. Check what your generator is rated to work against before you start, not after it stalls.
- Bubble size. A fine stone that gives a nice mist in water may barely pass gas in glycerin, or may pass it as a few large channels up one side of the vessel. Large bubbles mean poor contact.
- Diffuser wear. Treat stones as consumables here, exactly as in oil.
- Bubble release. A thick liquid holds bubbles at the surface longer, so more gas accumulates in the headspace. That matters for ventilation, below.
Warming it, and what that costs you
Glycerin thins dramatically when warmed, and it is tempting to heat it to make bubbling easier. That trade is real, but it is a trade: ozone is less soluble in a warmer liquid, and it breaks down faster in one.
Gentle warming to make the liquid workable is reasonable. Heating it hard to make the bubbles look impressive works directly against what you are trying to do. Use a water bath rather than direct heat, and keep any heat source away from an oxygen line.
Vessel, tubing and fittings
The same rules as every other ozone process, and they are not optional over a long run. A glass vessel, silicone or PTFE tubing, 316 stainless fittings. Anything else degrades under sustained ozone and ends up in the batch. See the materials guide.
Tall and narrow beats wide and shallow, for the same contact-time reason as water and oil: a bubble with further to rise spends longer in contact with the liquid.
Ventilation, and why glycerin needs more thought than oil
Everything a multi-hour ozone run demands, this one demands too. It also has a wrinkle of its own.
Because glycerin is thick and its bubbles are slow to break at the surface, a larger share of the ozone you feed in leaves the vessel as gas rather than staying in the liquid. The headspace above the glycerin is the most ozone-rich part of your setup, and it vents into whatever room you are standing in.
Run it somewhere well ventilated, or vent the headspace through an ozone destruct unit. Not a cupboard, not a small bathroom, not a room anyone sleeps in. If you can smell ozone, there is too much of it. Read the safety and ventilation guide before you start.
How long, and how you know to stop
This is where copied oil instructions do the most damage. Oil runs for days or weeks because a slow addition reaction is being driven towards completion. Glycerin has no such reaction to complete, so the multi-day runs people carry across are not achieving what they assume.
There is also no gel to watch for, which is exactly why runs drift long. Two things worth holding on to:
- There is no visual endpoint. Do not run it until "something happens", because nothing is going to.
- Over-running is not neutral. Prolonged oxidation of glycerin produces acidic breakdown products. A batch run far past any sensible point tends to smell sharp and test more acidic than the glycerin you started with.
Decide the run time in advance, write it down, and keep notes per batch. Since you cannot see the difference, records are the only thing that makes one batch comparable to the next.
Practical notes
- Start with dry glycerin and keep the vessel closed to the room. Glycerin pulls water out of humid air, and that changes the process. See choosing and storing glycerin.
- Check on it. Do not leave equipment running unattended without inspection.
- Keep the setup away from children and pets.
- Clean everything afterwards. Glycerin is sticky, and residue left in tubing is a nuisance on the next run.
- Dissolved ozone leaves. Whatever you have made is at its strongest the moment you switch off, and declines from there.
