Why it takes so long
Water absorbs ozone in minutes. Oil takes days to weeks of continuous bubbling. Ozone reacts with the unsaturated bonds in the oil rather than simply dissolving, and that reaction is slow.
As it proceeds the oil thickens, sometimes to a gel or paste. That viscosity change is the visible marker of progress, and it also progressively raises back-pressure on your diffuser and pump.
What that means for the equipment
- Duty cycle. Running for days is a different ask than running for ten minutes. Check the manufacturer's guidance on continuous operation.
- Back-pressure. As the oil thickens, flow drops. Expect to adjust, and expect the diffuser to load up.
- Diffuser wear. Stones used in oil clog far faster than in water. Treat them as consumables.
- Heat. A cold-corona unit that runs cool matters more over days than over minutes.
Vessel and materials
Use glass. Over days of exposure, ozone will attack a plastic vessel and you will end up with degraded plastic in the oil. Tubing must be silicone or PTFE. See the materials guide.
Tall and narrow again beats wide and shallow, for the same contact-time reason as water.
Ventilation over long runs
This is the part people underestimate. A process running for days is off-gassing ozone into the room for days.
Run it somewhere well ventilated, or vent the headspace through an ozone destruct unit. Do not run it in a cupboard, a small bathroom, or anywhere people sleep. If you can smell ozone, there is too much of it. Read the safety guide before starting a multi-day run.
Practical notes
- Keep the setup somewhere it can be left undisturbed and away from children and pets.
- Check on it. Do not leave equipment running unattended for long periods without inspection.
- Cooler oil holds ozone better, but very cold oil is more viscous. There is a trade-off.
- Clean everything afterwards. Oil residue in tubing goes rancid.
