How ozone gets into water
Ozone is only slightly soluble in water, and it decays while dissolving. So the job is to maximise contact between gas and liquid before the ozone disappears.
Three things control that:
- Bubble size. Smaller bubbles mean far more surface area for the same volume of gas. This is the biggest single factor.
- Contact time. Longer column of water, or longer run time, means more transfer.
- Water temperature. Cold water holds more dissolved ozone and holds it longer. Warm water sheds it quickly.
The diffuser matters most
A plain open tube produces large bubbles that rise fast and transfer very little. A diffuser stone breaks the flow into fine bubbles and dramatically improves transfer.
Stones clog over time with minerals. When bubbles get visibly coarser, replace it. A partly blocked stone also raises back-pressure, which changes your flow rate and therefore your concentration.
Vessel and tubing
Use glass where you can. Ozone attacks most plastics, so a plastic jug both degrades and contaminates. Tubing must be silicone or PTFE, never vinyl. See the materials guide.
A tall narrow vessel beats a wide shallow one: the bubbles travel further through water before reaching the surface.
Ventilation is not optional
Not all the ozone dissolves. The rest leaves the surface into the room. Never lean over the vessel to sniff it, and never do this in a sealed space. Ventilate, or vent the headspace through an ozone destruct unit. Our safety guide covers this properly.
It does not keep
Dissolved ozone starts leaving immediately, faster when warm, agitated or exposed to light. Whatever you are doing, it is made fresh and used promptly. Storing it is pointless.
